From tranquility to disheartened - Orbitz flight booking


I booked a flight through Orbitz 4 months in advance. We got to our destination with effortless anxiety. However, the return flight not so effortless. I started our check-in process online 8 hours before departure, when I realized that there was no boarding pass to print, I called directly to the airline who knew nothing about our return flight. I became concerned, he then said he see that we are to leave in another two days. Wrong:( That is when my stress free vacation ended, it just went downhill from there. I called Orbitz through whom I booked the flight, and listened to the prompt, which confirmed our flight reservation to the time/day and airline, exactly. I felt relief but was still uneasy. We cut out visit with family short to get to the airport, I just wanted to make sure everything was on schedule in person. We checked out of the hotel, returned the car rental, and went to check in our bags. Since we were an hour early the check in lines had not opened. Another family too was awaiting. When the time came to open no one in sight at Frontier Airlines. The other family knocked on the side door, a Frontier staff member came out but assured us there was no flight taking off today to Orlando. I was in disbelief, surely there was a misunderstanding somewhere. I went to play the prompts from Orbitz, and the staff member says that would not be necessary. There wasn't anything he could do, he called corporate, and came back saying he could refund our money which was $170.00 for two one way flights. I inquired of another airline leaving for Orlando which was Southwest. We ran over there to inquire of flight reservations for two. We were looking at almost $900.00 for two one way tickets :( We went back to Frontier, the staff member was gone and no where in sight. We called Orbitz back, they could only arranged for the flight to Orlando leaving in two days, we had no money for another flight so we took the arrangements; we had no rental car or hotel, there was free shuttle to and from airport/hotel, so my husband asked for accommodations for hotel stay; Orbitz had us on hold several times for long periods of time. They agreed upon $50 toward hotels that ranged from 160-200.00 that was in shuttle distance. We were charged two nights, no clean change of clothing, I had to hand wash personal garments. My husband stated on several instances that he had to be back at work the following day. He lost two days of work, and I lost tranquility. What started out as tranquil ends with so much disheartenment. I never knew how easy it could be to let go of stress during our vacation seeing our first grandchild, with family so loving and supportive to this...reality. My stress started back up. I am trying to not let this incidence rob my joy.
